Supplies for Moving? We Have Everything You Need, for a Move of Any Size

So, How Many Packing Supplies do I Actually Need for a Move?

Everyone thinks they need too many moving supplies. They run to the moving supply store, they buy random supplies, they forget most of the things, they go to the store for another trip and realize they don't have a lot of the things. And it happens to us every single week.

You'll be moving a house in Fresno. You need supplies. Moving supplies are simple: They consist of a few groups:

  • Boxes or moving boxes to put your stuff in.
  • Reputable moving bins and reusable moving boxes are stronger than cardboard boxes, can be stacked higher and do not require tape. The cardboard boxes don't last in Fresno summer, or in July in a garage.
  • Packing paper. Newspaper is messy, packing paper is clean. Dishes, wine glasses, picture frames, all need protection but without the ink.
  • Wardrobe boxes. Wardrobe boxes are the simplest boxes you'll find if you have a closet full of things you don't want in a heap. Wardrobe boxes are designed to hold all clothes in their hangers.
  • You'll also need a furniture dolly and a hand truck for your move. You can move one item in your house on your back. But, you can't move your whole house on your back.

And yes, that is about the complete list. What you don't do with boxes is buy too many of the wrong items, like bubble wrap for a few blocks away from your home in the Tower District. You don't actually have any real need of it. You can do a kitchen with packing paper and the boxes. It doesn't take much.

For a three-bedroom house packing, you will need about 50 or 60 boxes, one roll of packing paper, two to three wardrobe boxes and a furniture dolly. That is about it, according to the American Moving and Storage Association, the average American household moves with just a little more than 60 boxes worth of things. And that is how they count.

So what happens when you need all of the moving boxes and moving supplies in Fresno at the same time? We deliver all moving boxes (movable bins), packing paper, wardrobe boxes, furniture dollies and hand trucks to your house. You don't run around the city to three different locations to find your items. There is no deposit required, you can order your moving supplies and have them delivered directly to your home in Fresno, and we take care of it all.

You don't know how many boxes you are going to need? Give us a call and we'll tell you how many moving bins you should order in a little more than 2 minutes. Call us: (559) 470-7904.

So, How Many Boxes do You Actually Need for a Move?

This is one of the most common questions we get, but it's surprising how many people are off on this one.

A typical Fresno home will require 15 to 20 reusable moving bins. If you're living a two-bedroom home in the downtown Fresno or Tower District area, you should count on 25 to 35 boxes for your move. For a three-bedroom home, you can expect about 40 to 50. For a four-bedroom home in Fresno such as in Woodward Park, you could be looking at needing 60 boxes or more.

Those numbers don't even count your garage. This is a situation we witness on a weekly basis. Customers often order a seemingly adequate number, only to discover that the hall-closet, the pantry, and your children's craft bins were all left out of the picture. Kitchen items require eight to twelve boxes, not counting all the plates, drinking glasses, small appliances, and that junk drawer you have been avoiding for three years.

Fresno residents should utilize the following estimates when renting:

  • Studio/One Bedroom: 15-20 reusable boxes
  • Two Bedroom: 25-35 plastic boxes
  • Three Bedroom: 40-55 moving bins
  • Four Bedroom/large homes: 60+ reusable bins

Do not worry if you are unable to figure out what size you need! These estimates have been built into our rental packages that are designed based on actual homes being moved in Fresno. If you need any extras in the middle of the move, give us a call and we'll be able to help, since we are a local business! Also, most people forget to account for closet contents! A master bedroom alone should have four to six boxes filled with closet contents in its closet. Rent wardrobe boxes and you'll have less re-ironing to deal with! We also offer packing paper to pack any broken items and dishes. You can pick everything you'll need for a move right here! So to summarize, base your rental off the number of rooms in your house rather than a guess, which will always be about a dozen boxes short.

Specialty Boxes for Extra Large and Valuable Items

"The boxes I rented are great, but what if I have suits?" "What about my winter coats?" "What happens if I have a tall lamp?" That is a frequent question we get. Standard moving boxes simply do not accommodate everything in your home, and so we carry wardrobe boxes and other moving supplies for the things that do not fit anywhere else.

Wardrobe Box Rental

The most popular add-on service that we carry in Fresno are wardrobe boxes. These boxes are very tall and come with a built-in metal bar for hanger support. Simply take items off the closet rod, place them in the wardrobe box, and you're done! No folding, no wrinkling, no garbage bags over your hangers like it's 1997. Most of our customers rent two to three per closet, but that seems to be enough for the most part. Wardrobe boxes are not just for fancy suits and dresses! It can work for anything long or tall that you do not want to lay horizontally, including but not limited to:

  • Coats, suits, dresses, and uniforms
  • Curtains and drapes with hangers on them
  • Tall jackets and robes
  • Hanging shoe organizers that you do not want to disassemble

Our packing paper is all you need to protect those high value items like framed artwork, mirrors, or electronics. Since it’s ink-free, the packing paper won’t stain glass, plates, or clothing. Even broken items can be safely wrapped if you only need a few sheets. You also don’t have to worry about a few sheets of packing paper being wrapped.

We bring it all out to you. Your renter reusable moving bins, wardrobe boxes, packing paper, furniture dollies, and hand trucks. One delivery, straight to your door, be it in the Tower District or out by Woodward Park. Stop driving all over Fresno trying to find the right size box at 3 different stores.

Why Move-Grade Supplies Are Better Than Free Boxes and Store Bought

We totally understand. You drove by a grocery store on Shaw Avenue and noticed an abandoned stack of boxes on the loading dock. Free!

This is what happens every week. The person takes those free boxes, packs up their kitchen, and stacks them in the garage. In the morning, the bottom box is squished. Dishes are sliding around. Glassware is smashing. That box has now cost you more than a rental.

The cardboard from the big box store is pretty much the same. Single-use boxes. They still take tape, and a box cutter, and time to put together and assemble each box. Then the cardboard is flat at the end. Which probably doesn’t fit in a recycling can, at the very least, without getting it cut down.

What Makes Our Reusable Moving Boxes Different

Our moving bins are designed to protect your belongings during a move. We never heat soften. Never sink when stacked under weight. Never tilt, if perfectly stacked, which they should be without any tape, no need to assemble, just remove the lid and you are set to go.

  • Thicker walls that do not bow under loads up to 65 pounds
  • Lids that are attached so nothing gets pushed around during the ride
  • Flatter bases and same dimensions for stable, uniform stacking in any truck
  • Water-resistant material that keeps contents protected if you leave your boxes on the driveway overnight

Consider a 107 degree day in Fresno. Your boxes sitting in the truck for 2 hours. The cardboard gets all soft and mushy. We have to move in the Fresno summer. Reusable move boxes aren’t affected by the heat at all.

Same with our packing paper. We include it with every rental, because it’s the right material for wrapping breakables. Newspaper will leave ink residue on plates and picture frames. But, packing paper doesn’t. You know who the people are that skip packing paper and end up with chipped edges on their grandmother’s fine china serving dish. That’s just not smart. You know it. it. Do you want supplies that were actually designed to move things into a new home, or do you want supplies that were really designed to ship bananas? which ones we’d use to move our own family’s things.

How Fresno’s Climate Affects Your Things and Packing Boxes

Fresno summers when you’re actually trying to move a box are 105F or more days when cardboard becomes flimsy and tape adhesive becomes gooey. This is not a small issue. This is the kind of thing that can damage old photos in an album, warp a hardback book cover, or leave you with a bunch of boxes collapsed against the back of a moving truck.

Our reusable moving boxes won’t have this problem from the heat. Our plastic moving boxes won’t deform from the heat on an afternoon in July in the Tower District, or on the foggy morning near Woodward Park. They won’t get wet in Tule fog. Cardboard gets wet in Tule fog and you’ll never get your clothes from your cardboard boxes out of mildew from that night of foggy dampness. They just sit in your garage. It’s the same thing.

Fresno’s Weather is Hard on Packing Paper and Cardboard Boxes

Here’s what we tell every customer that wants to move from May to September:

  • The heat can soften the cardboard tape and glue in boxes, leading to cardboard bottom failures while you are carrying them.
  • When your cardboard boxes are filled with stuff and you leave them outside in the sun, the heat can raise the temperature inside the box higher than outside in the air temperature.
  • Fresno’s very dry summer time dust can get into every unsealed cardboard box seam.
  • Moisture from the fog will soften cardboard boxes, even overnight while sitting in a covered outdoor area.

Our reusable plastic moving boxes solve all four of these issues. They close on you without needing any tape. Dust is kept out. Moisture is kept out. The cardboard structure doesn’t deform in the heat.

Moving season in Fresno is very hot from April to September. This is our busy season, this is the time of year that you need your packing supplies for this climate the most. You don’t want to discover that your boxes don’t have the capability to survive in our climate once you’ve loaded and sealed your cardboard boxes with your kitchen stuff. If you are moving to Clovis or out near Sanger then you’re going to be loading and offloading during two to three hours of direct daylight hours.

We deliver your things, our reusable moving boxes, packing paper, hanging clothes wardrobe boxes. You pack on your timetable, we will pick them up when you are finished with them. No deposit. There’s no more gambling with your cardboard boxes staying in tact during a central valley heat wave. You’re using the same packing supplies that were built to deal with this kind of weather.

How many boxes do I actually need for a Fresno home move?

The number depends on your home size. A one-bedroom in the Tower District needs about 15 to 20 boxes. A two-bedroom runs 25 to 35. A three-bedroom needs 40 to 55. A four-bedroom home, like those in Woodward Park, often needs 60 or more. Most people forget closets, pantries, and that junk drawer. Your kitchen alone needs 8 to 12 boxes. When in doubt, call us — we can give you an accurate count in about two minutes.

Should I use cardboard boxes or reusable plastic bins for my Fresno move?

Reusable plastic moving bins are a better choice for Fresno moves. Cardboard boxes break down fast in Fresno’s summer heat — especially if they sit in a garage in July. Plastic bins stack higher, hold more weight, and don’t need tape. They also protect your belongings better during a move. If you’re moving across town or storing boxes overnight, plastic bins hold up in ways cardboard simply can’t in this climate.

Do I really need bubble wrap, or will packing paper work for dishes and fragile items?

Packing paper is all you need for most fragile items. It protects dishes, wine glasses, picture frames, and mirrors without leaving ink stains like newspaper does. Bubble wrap sounds useful but adds bulk and cost without much extra protection for a typical local move. For a short move — say, from one part of Fresno to another — packing paper plus the right box size gets the job done cleanly and efficiently.

What are wardrobe boxes, and do I actually need them?

Wardrobe boxes are tall moving boxes with a built-in metal hanging bar. You pull clothes straight off your closet rod and hang them inside — no folding, no wrinkling, no garbage bags over your hangers. Most people need two to three per closet. They also work great for long coats, curtains, and hanging shoe organizers. If you have a full closet in your Fresno home, wardrobe boxes save you serious re-ironing time after the move.

Can I get packing supplies delivered to my home in Fresno instead of driving around to find them?

Yes — we deliver everything directly to your door in Fresno. That means moving bins, packing paper, wardrobe boxes, furniture dollies, and hand trucks all come to you. No driving to three different stores. No deposit required. If you realize mid-move that you need more boxes, just call and we’ll sort it out fast. We’re a local Fresno business, so we can respond quickly when you need extra supplies on the fly.

Do I need a furniture dolly or hand truck for my move?

Yes, and most people underestimate how much they need one. You can carry one box on your back, but you can’t move a whole house that way. A furniture dolly handles heavy items like dressers and appliances. A hand truck stacks multiple boxes and moves them in one trip. Both save your back and cut your moving time in half. We include these with our rental packages so you don’t have to track them down separately across Fresno.
